Islanders take 2-1 series lead on Salmonbellies

The Delta Islanders scored early and often in a dominating 16-8 win over the New Westminster Salmonbellies Saturday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre to take a 2-1 lead in its best-of-seven B.C. Junior "A" Lacrosse League semi-final series.

Game four was played last night (past deadline) in New West with a pivotal

game five tonight in Ladner. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Delta came out flying in game three as Chase Fraser scored two minutes in.

Jon Phillips scored 33 seconds later and then Evan Messenger and Ryan Lewis scored 26 seconds apart to put the home side up 5-0. New West finally got on the board late in the period, but they couldn't get anything going against a stout Islanders' defence which held the 'Bellies to only nine shots in the period.

New West re-grouped in the second, capitalizing on some Islanders' penalties to cut the lead to 6-5, but the Islanders restored order scoring two goals seven seconds apart and scored three short-handed goals in the period to take an 11-5 lead after 40 minutes.

The third period saw both teams exchange goals - and trips to the penalty box - as the referees called 11 penalties between the two teams in a rough final frame, which also featured a fight between Delta's Mitch Winter and New West's Mitchell Macaulay.

Aidan Milburn led the way for the Islanders with a hat trick and three assists. Phillips also had a six-point night with two goals and four assists; Fraser had a hat trick, while Cam Milligan had a goal and four assists.
