Delta Islanders set franchise record for wins

The Delta Islanders set a new franchise record for regular season wins - and they didn't even have to take the floor in their final game to accomplish the feat.

Late Tuesday night, the B.C. Junior Amateur Lacrosse League (BCJALL) announced that the Wednesday night home game between the Islanders and Nanaimo Timbermen was cancelled.

Islanders assistant general manager and head coach Greg Rennie told the Optimist Wednesday afternoon that Nanaimo forfeited the game due to lack of player availability. The forfeit gave Delta its 15th win of the season and clinched second place in the league standings.

"A lot of positives moving forward and trying to break new ground for the Islanders," said Rennie. "We have a record-setting season, now we want to advance further in the playoffs and hopefully a berth in the Minto Cup."

Also Wednesday, the league announced the dates for the best-of-three wildcard playoff between the Langley Thunder and Port Coquitlam Saints - July 12, 14 and an if necessary game on July 15.

The first-place Coquitlam Adanacs will get the winner of the wildcard playoff in one semi-final series while the Islanders will get New West Salmonbellies in the other semi-final.

The series will start either Saturday, July 16 or Sunday, July 17 in Delta once the league approves the series dates, which is expected in the next few days.

"We want to take advantage of a good opportunity and that's our team's attitude right now," he said. "We're not looking past New West. We are only focused on New West and the opportunity that lies with them."
